“Let’s Use English Without Fear!”
The Department of English Language Teaching of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka organized a Virtual English Camp on the 28th of December 2021, as part of the ELTA–ELSE Faculty Development AHEAD Project. This inspiring event was specially designed for the first-year undergraduate batch and was held online via Zoom from 8.00 AM to 11.00 AM.
The session was conducted by Mrs. J.M.B.K. Jayasekera, a seasoned Lecturer in English Language Teaching from the University of Peradeniya. With over 20 years of experience in the Sri Lankan education system, Mrs. Jayasekera brought both warmth and wisdom to the session, guiding students with practical strategies and interactive activities to overcome their fear of using English.
The theme, "Let’s Use English Without Fear!", reflected the session’s key objective: to create a safe, supportive space for students to practice English with confidence. The camp featured a variety of engaging segments that encouraged participants to speak, collaborate, and express themselves freely in English—building both language skills and self-assurance.
The Virtual English Camp was a memorable experience for all participants, reinforcing the idea that language learning is most effective when approached with courage, creativity, and a willingness to engage.
