Let’s Use English Without Fear!
On the 13th of March 2022, the Department of English Language Teaching at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka organized a Virtual English Camp exclusively for the second-year batch under the ELTA-ELSE Faculty Development AHEAD Project. This engaging session, held from 8.00 AM to 11.00 AM via Zoom, aimed to empower students to overcome their hesitation in using English and to build confidence in real-time communication.
The camp was conducted by Dr. M.D.N.M.U. Mahawattha, a distinguished Senior Lecturer in English from the Department of Marketing Management. With over 20 years of experience in English Language Teaching across the Sri Lankan education system, Dr. Mahawattha brought invaluable insights, practical strategies, and a compassionate teaching style that resonated deeply with students.
Through interactive tasks, motivational guidance, and real-life language activities, the session encouraged learners to embrace English not just as a subject, but as a living, breathing medium of self-expression. It marked a significant step in creating a learner-centered atmosphere that celebrates effort over perfection and promotes fearless use of English in academic and professional spaces.
The Virtual English Camp was a meaningful initiative in fostering linguistic confidence, breaking barriers of fear, and paving the way for effective communication among undergraduates.
