The Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, recently hosted a five-day workshop series titled “Integrating AI into English Language Pedagogy and Assessment,” held from October 13th to 17th, 2025, at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.
The sessions were conducted by Dr. Usree Bhattacharya, U.S. Department of State English Language Specialist and Associate Professor in TESOL and World Languages at the University of Georgia (UGA), USA. Throughout the series, Dr. Bhattacharya guided participants through practical and thought-provoking discussions on how Artificial Intelligence can enhance English language teaching, learning, and assessment.
The workshop covered a range of topics, including AI-powered lesson design, ethical use of AI in education, automated assessment tools, and innovative ways to develop students’ critical and creative thinking through technology.
This initiative was funded by the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka, whose support made it possible to bring this timely and impactful exploration to the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages.
The Department of English Language Teaching extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Bhattacharya for her inspiring contribution, and to all participants for their active engagement in this forward-thinking academic experience that connected AI, linguistics, and pedagogy in meaningful ways.
